Topic of the Week:

This week we will be focusing on leadership positions in Greek life. To gain this weeks insight we interviewed Keaton Kruger. A Senior in Sigma Alpha Epsilon at the University of Northern Iowa finishing up the last semester of his public relations major and marketing minor.

Introduction to Greek life:

Keaton rushed when he was a freshman but was indecisive about joining a chapter at first. After joining he took advantage of the opportunities Greek life offered him. He held three lower tier positions in his early career and by his junior he was the IFC VP of Recruitment. Keaton was then faced with the difficult decision his senior year. After consideration, he concluded he would have more of an effect being the president of Sigma Alpha Epsilon as opposed to the president of the Interfraternity Council.

Advice for Accepting Leadership Positions:

Taking on any leadership position can be intimidating. Keaton mentioned that influencing others and motivating people to get behind you is a great quality to have. The biggest struggle, in his opinion is being able to work with others so having those qualities can help you in many ways. He suggests that you look at what you are getting into before accepting a leadership position. Know what is expected of you, and if possible, ask the previous position holder what they did with the position to ensure you are coming in with fresh ideas. For leaders struggling to keep up with their current positions, Keaton suggests that you find something that motivates you and to use any resources around you.

Greek Life Benefits:

“It’s not four years it’s for life” -Keaton Kruger

Keaton has benefited in multiple ways from Greek life. He considers the leadership opportunities offered by Greek life has been the biggest takeaway of his collegiate career. In his opinion, Keaton believes that if he had not joined Greek life he would not have been as successful of a student or a leader. When in the chapter he was pushed by the brothers around him to achieve his full potential. The realization that what he does affects more people than himself is what motivated him to succeed.

Advice for Indecisive Leaders:

Keaton’s last bit of advice was to ensure that the leadership position you are applying for is the best fit for you. Not everything is cut and dry concerning perfect fits in positions, but you should make sure your skill qualities apply to the leadership position you are taking on. Not everyone is able to do certain positions, however don’t sell yourself short. Any position you take on will leave a lasting mark on who you are as a person. The experience you take away from these Greek leadership positions will continue to help you in your development as a successful person.
